Epic Games "Fortnite" is technically in a early release stage, purchasable through founder packs and will be free to play in 2018, that being said this game hardly has the early release feel. Fortnite could be launched tomorrow and do perfectly well. I've been playing Fortnite on Xbox One since it's early release in July and there has been huge updates as well as amazing events with its own themed loot and characters. If your unfamiliar with Fornite, I'd have to say it's a multiplayer 3rd person shooter and melee survival game with a modernized Minecraft feel. Your able to build on the fly with resources collected from the world. The amazing part is that almost everything in the environment is destructible and makes some kind of resource. One big and time saving difference from Minecraft is that the resources are made for you. You do the smashing and your resources are collected and combined for you. All of these resources are used to make your weapons, traps, and of course your buildings. The on the go building is quite impressive and shockingly simple once you get the hang of it. You have a main set of four building options which are floor, wall, stairs, and pyramid. Each has variations in every way you would ever need. All the building is done with point and click and you can even edit the style of the structure after it's all ready built, even while fighting. Need to get through a wall? Don't go around, make a door. Need to get up a cliff in a hurry, make some stairs. Everything is quick and keeps up with the pace of the combat.

When starting Fornite you are given a starter character but can quickly play other types. Each character has its own abilities and focus in the game. The Soldier are proficient with assault rifles, the Ninjas who's focus is swords and mobility, Constructers who are the building pros and your Outlanders who are the resource collecting guru's. Each hero has a part to play and depending on your goal each has it's pro's and con's. Each mission can be played with up to four players and having a Hero of each type can really give your mission an edge.

There are a vast amount of weapon types including pistol, sniper, shotgun, axe, scythe, clubs, and of course the assault rifle. Every weapon requiring a schematic (blueprint) to rebuild. All the weapons have durability decay and will eventually break so acquiring the schematic for your favorite weapon is a must. Weapons can be upgraded and depending on rarity can acquire perks as leveled up. Some perks even include changing the damage type from standard to fire, water, nature, or energy. Each damage type having a strength and weakness against enemy types. The enemies which are called husks range from small and fast to big and beefy. Some have ranged abilities while most are melee. The Combat in Fortnite is pretty solid, but if your a fan of fast paced shooters Fortnite may be a bit slow for you. That's one of the only gripes about Fortnite I actually have. The characters have energy, so can only run for a limited amount of time. I'd say if that's a concern for you, the Ninja will probably be your go to character as it's the most mobile and also the fastest character type in the game.

One of the more complex areas of the game is the skill tree. The skill trees (and yes I said trees not tree) are large and are bought with stars earned in missions. The trees are quite impressive and a bit intimidating at first, they give you the ability to evolve your heroes, make your backpack inventory larger, and give you bonus abilities you can take with you in missions, and quite a bit more. Fortnite also has something called squads which you can build and rearrange to get more health, defense, ability, and trap perks. All of this can seem quite daunting at first, since the game has quite a bit of a learning curve and not enough tutorial out of the gate. This get's easier as you go and can be conquered with a bit more gameplay time under your belt.

All in all, even with the comparison to Minecraft this game truly is one of a kind. This game has major sustainability, as they seem to be constantly updating, adding weapons and running large scale events. I have even heard of new mission types in the works. Currently they are running a Halloween themed event that had an impressive amount of change to the standard game. They included a whole new quest line, new weapons and traps, and around 10 New Halloween themed Hero's to Collect and play with.

If you haven't played Fortnite yet and you dig survival and building games, there really is nothing better in that combo. Yes, this game has a few issues, (including no game chat as of yet) but don't they all? Overall this game has something special and the amount of attention that Epic Games is paying Fortnite, I really do hope continues. It's rare to find a game that gets as much included in it's updates as Fortnite and it keep the game fresh and me wanting more! If you don't have the game, it's available on all platforms and available in several different packages and I would most definitely recommend you go out and try it for yourself. Fortnite definitely has earned a solid 9 in my book!
